2024 started of with some great blessings. We’ve been fortunate enough to be finalist in the Xeyex Eyecare Awards in January 2024 for Audiologist of the Year.
This recognition has not only boosted our confidence and motivation, but it has also brought more attention to the important work we do in the field of audiology. We are grateful for the opportunity to showcase our dedication to helping individuals improve their hearing and overall quality of life.
Winning this prestigious award would be a dream come true, but even being named a finalist is an honour in itself. We look forward to continuing to provide exceptional care and support to our patients in the years ahead. It was a lovely evening and we feel honoured to be part of the event. Congratulations to all the finalists and winners.
The anticipation and excitement continued to build as we prepared for our journey to Kenya, Mombasa.
On 1 February Sean Walls travelled to Kenya. We were eager to meet the children at Ziwani School for the Deaf, knowing that we had the opportunity to make a real difference in their lives by providing them with the gift of hearing.
As we arrived in Mombasa on 5 February, we wasted no time in getting started. We set up our equipment and began conducting hearing tests for each child, carefully assessing their needs and determining the best course of action.
For those who required hearing aids, we made sure they received them promptly, ensuring that they would be able to hear and communicate more effectively.
The joy and gratitude on the faces of the children and their families was truly heart warming. It was a reminder of why we had embarked on this journey in the first place – to bring hope and support to those who needed it most.
Our first day at the Ziwani School for the Deaf has come to an end with 20 hearing tests completed and 17 school children fitted with hearing aids.
We are thrilled to see the immediate impact that these hearing aids have had on the children. Their faces lit up with joy as they heard sounds they may have never experienced before. It is truly heart warming to witness the transformation in their lives that these simple devices can bring.
As we reflect on our first day at Ziwani School for the Deaf, we are filled with a sense of fulfilment and gratitude. The opportunity to provide these children with the gift of hearing is a privilege that we do not take lightly. We are excited to continue our work here and make a difference in the lives of even more children in need.
Tomorrow, we will continue our efforts by conducting more hearing tests and fitting more children with hearing aids. Our goal is to ensure that every child at Ziwani School for the Deaf has access to the tools they need to thrive and succeed. We are committed to making a lasting impact on these children’s lives and look forward to seeing what the future holds for them.
In total we conducted 44 tests in Ziwani School for the Deaf. 39 children and 5 adults. We fitted 30 of them with aids, 27 binaural fittings and 3 monaural fitting. 27 were children and 3 were adults.
” In 2016 I decided to go to Queen Margaret University to train as a Hearing Aid Dispenser, I graduated in 2020.
I am incredibly proud of how far I have come since making the decision to pursue a career in audiology. The impact we have been able to make in Kenya through our hearing testing projects is truly rewarding. Seeing the smiles on people’s faces when they are able to hear clearly for the first time is priceless.
It hasn’t been easy balancing work, studying, and taking care of my family, but it has all been worth it. The challenges and obstacles along the way only made me more determined to succeed. I am proof that with dedication and perseverance, anything is possible.
I am excited to see what the future holds for our projects in Kenya and how many more lives we can positively impact. My journey from optical projects to audiology has been a fulfilling one, and I am grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives through my work. Never give up on your dreams, no matter how impossible they may seem – with hard work and determination, you can achieve anything” – Sean Walls
