I have recently started a new and exciting journey in my career by joining the hearing aid dispensing course at Queen Margaret University. I attended the university in September for my first week and will going back for several days over the next 2 years.
I met my fellow classmates, a diverse group of passionate individuals all eager to learn and make a difference in the world of audiology. It was inspiring to hear everyone’s stories about why they chose this path, and it reinforced my belief that we are all here for the same reason: to help those with hearing impairments lead fuller, more connected lives.
On my first day I joined my class after I had a tour of the university which made me feel comfortable and have a better understanding of my day to day life while on campus. I was thrilled to immerse myself in the foundational knowledge of hearing care.
Our instructors, who are experienced professionals in the field, introduced us to the basics of audiology, the anatomy of the ear, and the types of hearing loss.
I found it fascinating to learn about the technology behind hearing aids and the critical role we will play in fitting and supporting patients in their hearing journeys. One of the highlights of my first week was the practical workshops. We engaged in hands-on activities that allowed us to practice audiometry which is more commonly known as a hearing test.
I have already done many hearing tests as a hearing care assistant for the past 2 year but this gave me an idea of how much more there is to the tests when a patient sees an audiologist. This experience was not only educational but also incredibly rewarding. I could already envision the positive impact we will have on patients’ lives, helping them hear the world more clearly.
As I wrap up my first week, I am filled with anticipation for what lies ahead. I am excited about the challenges and learning opportunities that await us in the coming weeks.
This program not only equips us with technical skills but also emphasizes the importance of empathy and communication in patient care. I feel privileged to be on this path, knowing that
I will contribute to enhancing the quality of life for many individuals.
